USYNT standout Jaedyn Shaw signs with San Diego Wave

17-year-old USYNT standout from Texas, Jaedyn Shaw clears the NWSL’s discovery process, acquired by San Diego, despite ties to the Spirit.

San Diego Wave FC announce on Sunday that it has signed USYNT midfielder Jaedyn Shaw through 2023.

Shaw, who is a standout for the USWNT-U20 squad was recently on display at the Sud Ladies Cup in France this summer where she scored two goals in three matches, resulting in a title for the team. The Texas native is also expected to make the roster for next month’s FIFA U20 World Cup in Costa Rica.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join San Diego Wave,” Shaw said. “I’m looking forward to learning from Casey Stoney and the staff while helping the team continue to win games and hopefully bring home a championship in the club’s inaugural year!”

The 17-year-old with through the NWSL’s discovery process and was granted special permission into the league through “special circumstance” by commissioner Jessica Berman. Her rights were acquired by San Diego despite the fact that she was training with the Washington Spirit throughout the preseason.

The Spirit, who had Shaw listed on their roster, are in talks with San Diego, hoping to complete a trade.

“I want to thank the Washington Spirit for providing me a professional training environment for the past 6 months,” Shaw said. “I am very grateful for their support. I also want to thank the NWSL for facilitating a pathway for me to join the league and start my childhood dream of becoming a professional soccer player.”

San Diego’s next match is on Saturday, July 30 at 8 p.m. ET versus the Chicago Red Stars
