Portland Thorns’ Sophia Smith the youngest to win NWSL MVP

In just her second season, Smith has the league on notice and further validated that with her first MVP award.

Sophia Smith, Striker for the Portland Thorns was awarded the NWSL’s (National Women’s Soccer League) most valuable player on Thursday, becoming the league’s youngest regular-season MVP just days before their championship match versus the Kansas City Current.

The 22-year-old set a club record with 14 goals in 18 games, second only to San Diego Wave star Alex Morgan (16) this season, and added three assists to aid the Thorns to their second straight postseason participation.

“I truly have no words – this is so special to me and I wouldn’t be in this position without all the support and belief I had around me from so many people (you know who you are). Thank you,” Smith tweeted.

Smith, the top overall choice in the 2020 draft, previously led the Thorns to the Challenge Cup championship in 2021.

The Thorns will face Kansas City in the championship game on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

The NWSL also named Naomi Girma of the San Diego Wave Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year on Thursday.
