NY/NJ Gotham FC signs Goalkeeper Abby Smith

Gotham FC sign’s 2022 NWSL Championship winning goalkeeper Abby Smith from Portland Thorns, filling hole left by Ashlyn Harris’ retirement.

NJ/NY Gotham FC has signed goalkeeper Abby Smith to a three-year contract through the 2025 NWSL season. Smith joins Gotham after winning the NWSL Championship with the Portland Thorns in 2022.

“I couldn’t be more excited about my decision to join Gotham FC,” said Smith, “This experience has been educational and empowering. I feel so fortunate to be amongst the first class of athletes in the NWSL to benefit from the new CBA’s free agency policy. Gotham FC made their feelings known immediately and I was so impressed by their support and professionalism throughout the entire process. This organization values its players and its community, and those two qualities are most important to me. I can’t wait to come to New Jersey and get to work on the field and in my new community.”

Smith has played 56 matches for the Boston Breakers, Utah Royals FC, and Portland Thorns after being drafted in the third round of the 2016 NWSL Draft.

Prior to being acquired by on the Thorns August 17, 2021, Smith’s clean sheet against the OL Reign led Kansas City to their first NWSL victory. She was on loan from Utah to Western Sydney Wanderers FC in Australia in 2019.

Smith, a native of Texas, attended the University of Texas for four years and has represented the United States on the U-17, U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. She was called up to the US National Team for friendlies against Sweden and Norway in 2017.
