Brazil’s Debinha signs with Kansas City Current for the 2023 NWSL Season

The free agent midfielder signs with KC Team after announcing she will not be returning to the North Carolina Courage.

KANSAS CITY (January 9th, 2023) Kansas City Current has signed Brazilian international and NCC superstar Debinha through the 2024 season with a third-year option.

Said to be “One of the most sought-after free agents this offseason” from the likes of Arsenal W.F.C and Orlando Pride, She will be a crucial part of building onto the KC midfield after their successful run in the 2022 regular season.

“As a professional athlete, I always want to get better and to be on a competitive team that fights for titles, with excellent professionals,” says Debinha, “I’m sure it will help me in that goal and Kansas City showed that last season. The plan that the club has shown me left me really motivated, because of the entire training facility and the construction of a stadium for a women’s team.

Prior to 2023

Debinha played in 115 caps with the North Carolina Courage, where she had 42 goals to her name, as well as two NWSL championships, three straight NWSL Shields, and a Challenge Cup title. In 2019, she was named the NWSL Championship MVP after scoring the opening goal in the 2019 title match. She also holds the record for most goals all-time (9) in Challenge Cup play and was named Challenge Cup MVP back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. Debinha ranks fifth all-time in NWSL Playoff goals with three in six games. She most recently made the NWSL Best XI in 2022.

Internationally, Debinha represented Brazil at the 2010 FIFA U-20 World Cup and has 129 caps (fifth-most) with the senior team with appearances in the 2016 and 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2019 FIFA World Cup. She ranks third-all time in international goals (57) behind Marta and Cristiane. She is also a winner of the 2022 Copa América Femenina.

“Debinha is one of the best players in the world and we are so excited to have her in Kansas City,” says KC Current general manager Camille Levin Ashton, “She’s a force on the pitch and has shown that over the last decade. She will be a tremendous contributor to the team, and we are happy to have her on our side.”
